“Tombs are the clothes of the dead and a grave is a plain suit; while an expensive monument
is one with embroidery”.
How right was “Bucky” Fuller on his above quote referring to the legendary craft of hand stitching? The delicate art is not only used to decorate pretty frocks and homewares nowadays, but it continues to evolve in new directions, having become the medium for various artists and craft designers who use it to express their creativity. Talking of which, there is an artist in town that has us all wanting to rekindle our love with the needle and thread. Her name? Inge Jacobsen.
The artist’s embroidered images of high fashion magazines are not only highly artistic and powerfully conceptual but also visually stunning.
‘My main concern as an artist is how one responds to the mass of imagery in the world. Altering
these is central to a lot of my work’. – Says the UK based artist who is also interested in exploring
the different contexts in which photography can be used.
We are absolutely in love with her work, which kind of makes us think of the duality that exists in the fashion world. Whilst the image of high fashion is always a perfect one on the outside, it is all of those “invisible threads” pulling it together backstage, the ones which ultimately create that perfect looking image.
This isn´t the first time art, fashion and embroidery meet, so was the case when the fabulous British artist Tracey Emin collaborated with the chic house of Longchamp, following a series of fantastic exhibitions showcasing her amazing embroidery work. Remember those beautiful embroidered Longchamp bags? Oh, we’re still drooling over them!
If you love embroidery, take a look at Jenny Hart´s work too which is also fabulous! We are so in love with her stitched portrait of madame Piaf.
If that wasn’t enough inspiration to fuel your creative juices and get you stitching this summer, take a look at another one of our all time favourites, the classic by Tracey Emin also known as ‘The Tent’:
Oooh! We think we’ve just found ourselves a new hobby!
What do you think of the above pieces?
