This is a post about ’skellingtons’ and fashion.
Yup, it’s time to start chewing on yer bones, or so it seems, as skeletons -and death- are ‘dead’ trendy.
They are seen all over the haute couture catwalks, as we saw them at Gaultier and Givenchy with even burlesque star Dita von Teese playing the lovely bones as you can see here in my post for
The Wam Bam Blog.
Calaveras (that’s skeletons in Spanish fer ya English folks) remind me of Frida Kahlo – Riccardo Tisci’s
inspiration for Givenchy’s fab haute couture collection – you can see it here in my review of Paris Couture Fashion Week for The Model Management Blog.
One of Tisci’s dresses looks exactly like one of my favourite Frida paintings, called: ‘The Broken
Column’. If you are into Frida and art, check out the post I just wrote for the SMV Mag called
‘Calaveras y Diablitos’ (skeletons and little devils) – and you’ll see what I mean. You can read it here.
I am telling you, these things are trendy…
…and you know what? The trend is not likely to fade away during the summer, au contraire, expect
to see plenty of calaveras running around town, waaaaay before Halloween.
Poor skeletons! They are going to be so passe come October 31. They are going to be the ones that are gonna have to dress up, ha!
Now here is an interesting selection of skeleton fashion pieces for you to pick from. Would you wear?

A Skeleton Hoodie! Ha! Just when you thought you’d seen it all…

An Alexander McQueen Crystal Skeleton Print Jacket…

Check out the skellington leggings there

Unusual Jewellery made by Uni students called “Vertebrae”

Anja Rubik models a skeleton hand piece of jewellery

Yup you guys can cash in on the trend to! Yipee! Erm, yeah…

Not so sure about that DSquared2.
I am not sure about the skeleton leggings, not past your 20’s I woudn’t. But they’d rock at science and anatomy classes at school, hey? Argh, kids of today, eh! So unfair…
I am liking the gold skellington of that dead fella, which looks like once it may have had some fabulous
bit o’ fur on him! I wonder if you get that separately. Hmmm, tempting. Jeeves, bring me my cheque book will ya!
Now here are a couple of my favourite skeleton editorials, the first is a Tim Burton piece for Harper Bazaar…
…and the second is the most stunning set of images with skeletons on ‘em by the fabulous legend of a photographer that is Ruven Afanador:

Cool hey?
So… bones and fashion, yay or nay?
Love and bones,
xoxo

Ok I know the word cool is over-used, BUT!! This is VERY COOL!!!!!!!! I love the gothic imagery that goes with the trend. Nona the words ‘pulse’ and ‘fingers on’ come to mind

Even though I find the concept of skeletal-fashion a bit odd, the last set of photos look really stylish. Kudos, Nona, for the nice post.

Just creeps me out. the models are skinny and to see bones terrifies me? what is the significance of this? death is beautiful?

Skeletons are used in different cultures as a celebration of a person”s life.
I actually think the human skull and bones are graphically intriguing and work well in clothing and jewelry. I have quite a collection from Betsey Johnson to Philan silk chiffon skull dresses as well as diamond skull necklaces and I am 59 years old. I have been wearing skull inspired pieces for 30 years and am glad they are the rage now!
