I am on strike. I hereby refuse to buy any fashion magazine with a big smile celebrity face on the cover. I am sick of seeing yet another cover featuring Jennifer Aniston, Angelina Jolie, Penelope Cruise, Kate Hudson and so on.
What happened to covers with memorable and mesmerizing poses? They are almost lost in the Hollywood parade at stores and newspaper stands. I mean, I get it, celebrities sell. But these magazines are representing the fashion industry, creativity, innovation, telling a story with just one single photo! I want to see something that resembles art, not an advertisement for a teeth whitening company..
I mean Come on.. Miley Cyrus, Really..
WOW, a paparrazzi shot of Mischa Barton, original..
And I haven’t even started about the covers of the more accessible fashion magazines like Cosmopolitan, Glamour and Marie Claire: pure Celebrity face shots and wind machines.
The use of celebrities for editorials, campaigns and covers should be done in a fashionable context (like Emma Watson for Harper’s Bazaar in Nona’s blog for example) and in moderation. When you’re seeing the 10th advertisement of Scarlett Johansson passing by in the city center, it’s getting quite boring..
Celebrities have been taking over this industry by starting their own fashion labels, fragrances, make up lines and so on. Let’s step away from Hollywood and go back to artistic, exclusive covers and last but not least, MODELS ON TOP.
I rest my case. Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury, are you with me!

Nice Post Irene, It sounds like people wants to see people like them on Tv ads, magazine and so on… (cf. Dove campaign for all the beauties) But let me ask Where is the dream?? I dont wanna see Jenifer aniston on Vogue Cover! I wanna see somebody I will never ever see in the street or in the supermaret! (sorry jenn but without photoshop you could look like my neighboor):))

That´s so true but sometimes is also nice to see what celebrities are up to =)
the point is that there´s no equilibirum nowadays!

I agree for the most part. I’m okay when it’s a celebrity that’s known for having great personal style. Cameron Diaz is ok with me. Miley Cyrus, definitely no.
And what’s this obsession with Lindsay Lohan???

I wonder where does Alexa Chung fall in this category…? that’s a confusing one, cause she was previously a model and she is doing the cover of Vogue March. I agree with you Irene, leave it to the pro’s! “Ad for a Teeth whitening co” LOL so true! x

Heyy, yeah I saw the cover, I have to say that it didn’t appeal to me at all, not even because she is a celebrity/exmodel, but more because of the plain shot, like they were doing testshots to check the lighting or something, the outfit isn’t working in her advantage either.. what do you think about this cover??

Guilty as charged, but it’s johnny depp. He’s an icon! + half naked and in a cool context, much different than putting someone like Zac Afron on the cover with a shiny suit and fake smile. On the other hand, I didnt like the johnny depp cover on Vanity Fair cause here he is portrayed in the typical hollywood celebrity cover way: http://www.dailystab.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/johnny-depp-vantity-fair.jpg
It’s all about context! In any case, I’d still prefer a certain Spanish male model on the cover..

No doubt there’s truth to the fact that we do see lots of celebrities fronting fashion magazines. Maybe too many. Sure! But I would say that when it’s appropriate, it’s acceptable. I see the cover as a teaser for the content, and depending on what you want out of the magazine, it can be ok. But it’s ultimately the public who buys these magazines. So unless we know something that the editors of influential fashion mags don’t, then I guess we either support the magazines, how they’re made and we buy them, or we just don’t. Choose for yourselves, people!

Absolutamente de acuerdo!
Bring those models back!
I am sick and tired of starring at 13years old (or whatever) Miley Cyrus on fashion magazines’ cover.
