Paparazzi Model Management was founded in 1983 and is the oldest and biggest modeling agency in Finland. It was founded by Laila Snellman, a former model herself, who came up with the idea of starting a modeling agency in Finland. Today Paparazzi has about 200 models in their books out of which 60 are senior models, 20% are male models, and the rest are established and new female models. I had the exciting opportunity to interview Paparazzi for modelmanagement.com, and get more in depth information about the agency, their thriving business, as well as their growing list of models that are now gracing the catwalks and fashion magazines.

Paparazzi models work mostly within the Finnish market however many models are sent to work for foreign agencies in several different countries. Laila stressed the importance of the international market for models and agencies alike. “For models to have a good modeling career it’s very important to be able to work for several different markets to get the most benefit out of it. For agencies it’s important to be well known internationally, which makes it much easier to get new talents right away placed with the best foreign agencies.”
The current trend for models in Finland is over 175 cm tall, and to my surprise, they do not necessarily have to be particularly skinny. As explained by Laila, the Finnish modeling market is representing the demand of the public, which prefers not to see too slender models. Finnish modeling agencies, Paparazzi included, are answering these demands by concentrating their efforts on signing with “normal-sized” models.
So, what makes Paparazzi different from other modeling agencies in Finland? What sets them apart from their competitors? Paparazzi’s models include a wide selection of beauties and the agency is representing many foreign models for direct bookings for several Finnish clients. As Laila went on to explain, “Throughout the 26 years of Paparazzi’s existence, we have constantly been able to produce new stars who have become nationally very known figures in the society”.

Suvi Koponen, Paparazzi's Top Female Model
Paparazzi’s top female model of the moment is 21-year old Suvi Koponen. Born and raised in Finland, she now resides in New York. Apart from Paparazzi, Suvi is also signed with several other modeling agencies: Women Management in Paris and Milan, Supreme New York and Premier London. The story of the beginning of her modeling career is an interesting one. Suvi rose to fame after winning the Mallikoulu contest (the Finnish Next Top Model equivalent). Paparazzi has accounted Suvi’s success to her fresh unique look. She has fronted numerous campaigns such as Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Miu Miu, Balenciaga and Blumarine, to mention a few. Suvi has established a credible modeling career for herself which is clearly on the rise.

TOP MALE MODEL
Luca Bertamini, Top Male Model
Paparazzi’s top male model is 25-year old Luca Bertamini, who was born in Finland, where he is also currently residing. Luca was discovered through one of the agency’s test photographers. His unique look derives from his mix of Italian and Finnish blood. His biggest campaign to date has been Y-3.

My interesting chat with Paparazzi went onto discussing the ways by which they find new faces as well as new clients. Laila explained that they discover new faces through various channels: The internet, modeling competitions, scouting and from the street. In terms of creating new contacts and clients Laila said that “We have such a strong reputation in Finland that all new clients find us through the internet and different directories.”
The importance of the internet in building and developing a modeling agency seems as important to Paparazzi as for any other agency. For Paparazzi, the internet has become an important tool in marketing their models. The much slower method of the past of sending models’ portfolios to clients via couriers has now been replaced by various tools of the net. Today’s digital world is opening a new world of opportunities for both models and agencies alike. As mentioned by Laila, “We receive hundreds of emails per week from young people who want to become models”.

Sarianne Hirvonen, Top New Female Face
Finland has many fresh, new faces starting out in the business. Paparazzi’s top new female face is Sarianne Hirvonen. She is only 15 years old and is already showing clear potential for success. She was born in Finland, and she is currently residing in the capital, Helsinki. Sarianne’s potential was spotted at a Paparazzi open call. So what sets Sarianne apart from other new faces? According to the head booker of Paparazzi, Jari Leskinen, it’s down to her “natural, pure Nordic look”.

Eetu Topo, Paparazzi's Top New Male Face
As only 20% of Paparazzi’s models are male, the competition must be fierce. The latest male model to show that he has that ‘thing’ needed to break in the business is 18-year old Eetu Topo. Eetu was born in Helsinki, where he also currently resides. Eetu was discovered at a Paparazzi open call. His success has been linked to his killer combo of “boyish looks and great attitude”. Eetu is still quite new in the business, and he is traveling to Milan for the first time this summer.

After my conversations with Laila, the founder of Paparazzi, as well as the agency’s head booker Jari Leskinen, I feel enlightened on how a modeling agency operates in Finland and how they run their business and work with their models, both established and new models. It was fascinating to find out how Paparazzi, Finland’s oldest modeling agency, has experienced the times of change and how it has affected the conduct of business in the modeling industry. Today’s digital era is gaining momentum by the minute and is creating changes in the modeling scene. These changes can be seen in many fronts. The world is broader and more accessible as new innovations and reforms are being introduced in how businesses are run. But what ultimately creates a lasting and successful modeling agency seems to lie in its history and reputation, which in Paparazzi’s case has created a growing list of models, a great cliental as well as a name that is known both nationally and internationally.

Mä olen sellaine jokseenkin ujo, mutta ja noh rehellisesti sanottuna vartalossa olisi parantamisen varaa, muttajoka tapauksessa kiehtoo malliimaailma. ..kaukaisuudessa. ehkä tä nyt ois se mun viimeinen mahdollisuus, koska ikääkin on jo kohta 26 vuotta.,enkä ole uskaltanut aikaisemmin ottaa yhteyksiä mutta olisihan se kiinnostavaa yrittää. ja eihän sitä voi koskaan tietää. with love sussa xx

hei, olen kohta 15 ja haaveilen mallinurasta mutta olen vain 160 cm pitkä :/ mutta vartalo muuten ok kunnossa ja haluaisin aloittaa mallitoimintaa en vain tiedä mihin ottaisin yhteyttä ja miten luoda mallikansion jne. asun lahden seudulla

Vastaan teille molemmille tässä samassa, koska kysymyksenne ovat jokseenkin samanlaiset.
Ehdottaisin, että otatte yhteyttä suurempiin ja pienempiin mallitoimistoihin lähellä Lahtea, sekä muualla Suomessa. Tiedän erään mallitoimiston, joka sijaitsee Hollolassa. Toimiston nimi Model Ace. Heidän mainosmallien pituusraja on vähintään 160 cm, eli tätä miettien, voisitte varmasti molemmat yrittää päästä heidän kirjoilleen. Sen lisäksi tiedän, että Tampereelta löytyy useampia mallitoimistoja, joihin voisitte ottaa yhteyttä (mm. promodel.fi, fashionstudio.net ja Clamos Studio Tampere).
Sen lisäksi rohkaisen teitä ottamaan yhteyttä suurempiin mallitoimistoihin, kuten Paparazziin, Modelboomiin ja Fondi Modelsiin, jotka kaikki sijaitsevat Helsingissä. Vaikka suurilla mallitoimistoilla saattaa olla tarkemmat pituusvaatimukset, ottaisin silti heihin yhteyttä. Heiltä saattaa löytyä tilaa lyhyemmille malleille, jotka sopivat mainosmalleiksi.

Kiva, että neuvoistani oli apua. Suosittelen sekä kasvo- että vartalokuvien lähettämistä (nimenomaan selkeitä kuvia, joissa kasvosi piirteet näkyvät). Kuvien lisäksi liittäsin mukaan lisätietoja itsestäsi ja siitä, minkälaisia mallinhommia etsit, miten vapaa olet matkustamaan, jne.
Laita ihmeessä myös ModelManagement.comin sivulle kuvasi, jos sinua kiinnostaa lähteä kansainvälisille markkinoille. Tämän voit tehdä nettisivun Home -sivun kautta. Sieltä löydät ohjeet, miten edetä. Ottaisin sinuna yhteyttä Paparazziin joko sähköpostitse tai puhelimitse. Voisin kuvitella, että koska Paparazzi on Suomen nro.1 mallitoimisto, työharjoittelupaikoista saattaa olla kova kilpailu. Mutta varmasti kannattaa kokeilla ottamalla heihin yhteyttä ja kertomalla opinnoistasi ja tulevaisuuden toiveistasi työskennellä mallialalla. Ottaisin myös yhteyttä muihin suuriin mallitoimistoihin Helsingissä, kuten Fondi Modelsiin ja Modelboomiin, jotka ovat arvostettuja ja maailmalla tunnettuja mallitoimistoja.
