From the land of lush landscapes, maple syrup and Mounties, comes a batch of home-grown beauties. Canada has a tendency to be placed on the dusty back shelves of memory when it comes to “up-to-the-minute” events and fashion, but a lot is going on, bubbling away beneath the surface. Some of the best top models of the moment are Canadian. Faces that we see every day in such diverse areas as television, magazines, billboards or runways, to name but a few.

Lisa Cant

Lisa was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and grew up in the small town of Redwood Meadows. One fine day in 1999, at the tender age of 14, while at IKEA, she was discovered.

She has been a very busy girl, appearing on any number of catwalks for many different designers; featuring on many magazine covers; working with the world’s best photographers and even gracing the cover of the iconic photography book: Tim Walker Pictures, (who in my opinion, is one of the best photographers around at this moment).

She is known as “The Bug” due to her enormous eyes. Those eyes that make her so enchanting. She is one of the faces of Chanel, Juicy Couture Perfume and stars in a gorgeous Carolina Herrera perfume advertisement on television. All dressed in red, with a very catchy tune and looking very pleased with herself.

Cant is represented by Images Models in Calgary, Canada, Folio Models in Montreal, Canada, Photogenics Model Management in Los Angeles, USA, Trump Model Management in New York City, USA, Take 2 Model Management in London, England and Sutherland Models in Toronto, Canada.

Jessica Stam

Blonde beauty Jessica Stam is also from the land of maple syrup. Born in 1986, in Kicardine, Ontario, Canada, Stam grew up on a farm. Her dream was to become a dentist, but luckily, she was discovered in her local Tim Horton’s, (a very typical Canadian doughnut shop). The photographer, Steven Meisel, played an important part in jump-starting her career, using her in every campaign he shot. It is considered that Jessica Stam is his muse.

The Canadian model has walked the straight and narrow for many designers and graced the covers of any number of magazines. The designer Marc Jacobs has even created a bag inspired and named after her: the Marc Jacobs Stam.

In 2004 she appeared in a short film, Agent Orange and during 2007, she was one of the world’s top earning supermodels. She is considered part of the “doll-faced” model pack that is so in demand right now. Her ice blue / grey eyes are her trademark and feature strongly in her photographs.

Jessica is represented by IMG London, England, IMG Milano, Italy, IMG New York, USA, Bravo Models in Tokyo, Japan, 2pm Model Management in Copenhagen, Denmark and IMG Paris, France to name a few.

Daria Werbowy

Although Daria Werbowy was born in the Ukraine, in 1983, she moved with her family to Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, at the tender age of 3. At 14, she was already very tall and slim, but hadn’t given much thought to modeling. That changed soon after, during a meeting with one of her schoolmate’s mom who headed up a modeling agency. It took awhile for international success to flourish, but once it arrived, there was no stopping her.

Her extraordinary face has been one of the most visible in recent years. (If you pick up almost any type of fashion magazine, it’s a case of how many times does Daria appear throughout, in advertisements and editorials). She has headed up major campaigns such as Prada perfume, the recent Roberto Cavalli season campaigns or Lancome make up. She has appeared in televised H&M advertisement campaigns, bringing her smack into the general public eye. She seems to fit each and every moment like a hand-sewn glove.

In 2003, Daria managed to walk in more shows than any other model in one single season. Maybe a slow starter, she’s having the last laugh now.

A few of Daria’s agencies are: IMG London, England, IMG Milano, Italy, IMG New York, USA, IMG Paris, France and Folio Montreal, Canada.

Coco Rocha

This raven-haired girl is yet another Canadian supermodel. She was born in Toronto, Canada, but grew up in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada. Coco was discovered at the young age of 14 while competing in an Irish dance competition.

Coco is one of the few models who have dared speak out against eating disorders in the modeling industry due to pressures she experienced when she was a fledgling model. Not only beautiful, but conscientious as well!

She has walked innumerable shows for iconic designers, even opening Jean Paul Gaultier’s Scottish Highlands – inspired Fall/Winter 2007 show by Irish dancing down the runway. American Vogue dubbed this the “Coco Moment”, considering it a sign that the fashion industry misses the “golden era” of 80’s supermodels.

Not to be missed was Coco’s recent appearance as the embodiment of Yves Saint Laurent’s perfume: Elle. Anyone who has seen the advertisement on television will remember the model’s slick, strict ponytail, smoky eyes and energetic movements.

Rocha is represented by such agencies as: Model Management Hamburg, Germany, Why Not Model Management in New York, USA, Storm in London, England, Elite New York, USA, Elite Copenhagen, Denmark, Marilyn Agency in Paris, France and Modelink Gothenburg, Sweden, are a few examples.

Having just mentioned the “golden era” of supermodels during the 80s, this brings to mind one of the famous five: Linda Evangelista. Yes, Linda is Canadian and one of the best supermodels of all time.
In a league of her own. What needs to be said? Linda is a whole other story!

These are just a few, picked ripe from the Canadian harvest crop of models that have made it to the top. Some have started slow and built up to a great blaze, a great career. Others have burst onto the scene and captivate with their looks. All have great guts and determination to reach the pinnacle where they find themselves today. Hard work and dedication. Each in their own way, settling in, to the niche of great Canadian models. I, for one, hope to see many more great campaigns, stellar runway moments and photographs captured in time of these talented girls.
